I'm back after a wonderful festive break with close friends and family. I hope you could also get some relaxation at this time of year. However, 2025 is now here, and the world of AI has not stopped. I won't be as silly as to claim that 2025 is 'The Year of AI", but I think we'll see some significant events over the next 12 months:

  • LLM companies are going to have to start making real money
  • The rate of development on LLM models will slow
  • AI Agents will be where real-world use cases emerge for AI

AI To Spot Potential Drunk Drivers

To increase road safety, the UK has introduced AI-powered cameras to identify potential drunk drivers by analysing erratic driving patterns. These cameras have been set up in regions including Devon, Cornwall, Staffordshire, and Greater Manchester, all intending to reduce drink and drug-driving incidents through real-time monitoring and alerting the police.

Anthropic AI in talks to raise $2bn

As LLM companies consume ever more resources but with incoming revenue not matching, they need to raise capital. It's rumoured this is just the case for Anthropic, where it's believed Lightspeed Venture Partners are leading a funding round for $2bn. That's quite a chunk of cash. This would make Anthropic the fifth-largest start-up in the US.

Apple AI Doesn't Seem Too Intelligent

There are calls for Apple to pull it's AI system that's supposed to summarise news stories after it was found to be pushing out a lot of inaccurate and misleading information. In one instance it claimed that young darts sensation Luke Littler had one the PDC World Darts Championship the day before the final had even taken place. Clearly, that was inaccurate, or perhaps Apple has invented a very good tool that can see the future.
