Nvidia Results

It would be remiss of me not to talk about Nvidia’s Q2 earnings report that was announced on Wednesday night.  The GPU chip manufacturer released numbers indicating revenues of $30 billion for the 2nd quarter, which is up 15% on the last quarter and up 122% on the same period a year ago. Impressive as these figures are, they only just beat the market expectations and as a result, Nvidia’s shareprice dropped by 6%.  It’s tough at the top!

AWS Golf Course Creator

With the 2024 PGA TOUR Championship starting on August 28, AWS, who is the PGA Tours cloud partner, launched a fun interactive site that let’s you create a poster for your ideal golf course. Using simple options like, Mountain, Forest etc, the site will take your prompts and design your ideal golf course.  Not an entirely productive use of time (or even technology), but a fun 2 minutes for sure.  You can try it here.

Ice Cream

Perhaps not a heading you expected to read on a AI site, but I’ve come across a couple of stories relating to ice cream recently, and as we’re approaching the end of the summer here in the UK, why shouldn’t we include stories on this delicious treat!

In Italy, Terra Gelato has turned to generative AI to see if it can conjure up some new and previously unthought recipe ideas.  They now offer a gelato called AI Terra which is white chocolate with a balsamic berry sauce and caramelised black pepper.

CPG giant Unilever has been using AI to monitor stock levels in it’s customer ice-cream freezers.  Cameras are placed in vendors freezer cabinets and the model has been trained to only recognise Unilever’s brands, making stock orders highly efficient.

One example of where AI and ice cream have not mixed well comes from McDonalds, which stopped a trail at its drive-thru.  The system was supposed to take orders from customers’ voice instructions at the kiosk, but it had mixed results, with one order having bacon added to the top of an ice cream.

That‘s it for this week.
